Feeling Lucky?

Miss Yunks’s search for the perfect cupcake continues.

Here comes Somerville’s second moment in the spotlight:

It had been a while since my last visit to Kickass Cupcakes in Davis Sq. so I decided I needed to taste again before I could write about it. I judge bakeries by how good their white cake is because that’s a basic staple. If the white cake isn’t good, chances are flavors won’t be good. I judge Italian restaurants similarly – by the marinara sauce. A good red sauce is a sign of a good restuarant – but that’s another story for another day. I remember enjoying the white cupcake with chocolate frosting at Kickass Cupcakes, so since they passed my initial test I moved to level 2: the flavors.

I chose the Lucky Cupcake. As the website describes, this is a “luscious lemon cupcake with white chocolate buttercream and candied ginger, comes with a fortune.” I was most excited for the fortune, honestly, because I tend to not mix fruit with dessert.

The cupcake was very attractive; the frosting was perfectly smeared and topped with a laminated fortune. The cake was a little dry, but it was the end of the day so perhaps it would be better fresh in the morning. The lemon frosting was decent, could have been sweeter but a bite of cake + frosting was a good combination of flavors. If you’re feeling lucky, I’d recommend this cupcake. It gets a 7. But don’t get too excited about the fortunes – they’re pretty lame. Mine said “He’s just not that into you.” Seriously. And no lucky numbers. Hardly creative and not even a fortune. For a good fortune, stick to Chinese food.

If you’re in the area, you should also go to Dave’s Fresh Pasta and get the cheese ravioli. Then go home and fry them. All you need is a small frying pan and oil. These are the best ravioli I can remember eating. If you know me, you know I have a terrible memory, but I always remember good food.
