Gran Gusto – Cambridge

This past Friday night, Miss Yunks dined out at a very local to her Cambridge restaurant: Gran Gusto.  Gran Gusto is an authentic Italian restaurant with a homemade feel tucked behind an unsuspecting building in North Cambridge, somewhat between Huron Village and Porter Square.

My sister and her boyfriend were in town and BF and I joined them and some friends for dinner. I’d never heard of Gran Gusto and was excited to discover an Italian restaurant near my apartment. When BF and I arrived at the restaurant, our dinner dates were already enjoying some wine at our table.  We joined right in and all shared another bottle.

I loved the giant wine glass! And, the wine tasted good too. I felt like Jules in Cougar Town drinking from such a big wine glass. Our waiter shared the nightly specials with us and although they had a homemade ravioli filled with homemade cheeses, I was really craving pizza. Funnily enough, I had pizza every day this past weekend.  Craving Cured.

At Gran Gusto, I ordered the Sorrentina pizza, topped with homemade  smoked mozzarella, tomato, eggplant and basil.

The individual size pizza is exactly what I wanted.  I like ordering enough to eat for dinner at the moment and enough to have leftovers the next day.  The Sorrentina pizza was pretty good, but I wouldn’t order it again.  While I loved the tomatoes, eggplant and dough, I learned the hard way I don’t like smoked mozzarella.  I think I’d enjoy this pizza much more if I had opted for bufala mozzarella instead.  Oh well.

For your viewing pleasure, I snapped some shots of others’ meals.

BF’s Diavola pizza: Tomato sauce, bufala mozzarella,
spicy salami, basil (He said it tasted like pepperoni)

My sister’s boyfriend’s Ravioli Special.  Nice ordering choice, B.

My sister’s eggplant lasagna.

While I didn’t taste anyone else’s meal, they sure looked good!  We munched on a delicious bread basket with olive oil while waiting for our meals, and the service was impeccable throughout the evening.  Servers constantly filled out water and wine glasses and were always available.  I would happily eat at Gran Gusto again and order a pasta!

Have you eaten at Gran Gusto? Where is your favorite Italian food?

And while I have you here – the real reason my sister came home was not just for dinner.  On Saturday, we celebrated our cousin’s fifth birthday! Check out this birthday cake!

I love pizza, but the crust on that isn’t my fave type. Thanks for the review!

I live in Cambridge too and have been meaning to try Gran Gusto but still haven’t gotten around to it! Eggplant lasagna sounds good. My favorite Italian food is pasta (any kind!)
