Signature Brands Frosting in Oreo and S’mores – Review and Giveaway

And the winner is…

Emily of A Cambridge Story! Congrats!

A-Tooch and Miss Yunks love to whip up a fresh batch of frosting to go with cupcakes, but sometimes there just isn’t time. When Signature Brands offered us these new to the market, easy frostings in two flavors we love — Oreo Ultimate Icing and S’mores Dessert Icing — we thought we’d give them a go. We each received a box with the four frosting flavors and four sets of four decorating tips.

A-Tooch invited the girls over one night and whipped up a quick batch of plain butter cake cupcakes.

First taste test: the good ol’ straight-out-of-the-package finger test (because we’ve all been there with a tub of Betty Crocker frosting before…) The flavor is definitely there but this frosting is a little more dense, and less sweet then your regular tub of frosting. The fact that it’s dense and not as light as regular frosting makes it ideal for decorative toppings, or maybe even filled cupcakes :)

Like you would with regular frosting and a pastry bag, these easy frostings can be used with different size/shape tips. They fit right on top of the pouch for easy decorating. I got creative and personalized some of the little guys for my friends.

Admittedly, these weren’t the prettiest colors around (brown and gray, er…) But they were pretty tasty; the girls approved.

Miss Yunks baked some mini Oreo cupcakes to use for her frosting holder and brought the cupcakes and some of these cookies to her friends’ house. I improvised on a recipe and my mini cupcakes turned out pretty well – I love the texture baked Oreos give to cake.  But, I’ll focus on the frosting for now.

I frosted some cupcakes with each of the four types of frosting: Oreo Cream, Chocolate Oreo Cream, S’mores Chocolate, and S’mores Cinnamon Chocolate.

The cupcakes lined up to get frosted.  I cored each one to fill with frosting.

I experimented with the different frosting tips provided and found this star tip worked best.  When I fill cupcakes, I slice the top off of the middle circle I cut out so I can cover the frosting hole.

Then, I frost the top.

We both found the frosting bags more difficult to squeeze than a pastry bag and guessed it’s because there’s no air hole.  If you’re planning on using the whole bag at once, I suggest cutting a small hole in the bottom of the bag. (One of A-Tooch’s bags exploded in the frosting frenzy.) The frosting was easiest to push through this star tip because it’s wider than the other three.

The Original Oreo Cream was my favorite; it really tasted like the middle of an Oreo.  My second favorite was the Chocolate Oreo Cream, which tastes like the chocolate cream filling of the vanilla Oreo cookies.

The S’mores frostings tasted like graham crackers to me, chocolate grahams but grahams. Graham crackers are my least favorite part of S’mores. If I could eat just toasted marshmallow on top of melted chocolate I would, but it’s a bit too messy without the graham.  If you like the graham part of S’mores you will love these two frosting samples.  I lined up my cupcakes and we were ready to go.

Wow. Both of the S’mores frostings sounds excellent. I’m intrigued by the S’mores cinnamon in particular… but S’mores chocolate also sounds fantastic!

Yum– those cupcakes look awesome! I’d love to get my hands on some of the S’More’s chocolate one. Hubs and I have a camping trip planned over Memorial Day weekend with another couple, and I’d love to bring (and blog about!) S’Mores whoopie pies as a camping treat!
