Brighton Beach just may be the craziest/best Russian neighborhood in America. (I actually haven’t been to any others so can’t say this definitively.)
After many years in NYC and zero trips out to Brighton, I hopped on board when this little Russian lady, my friend Y, announced her birthday party. The Yelp reviews did not lie — Tatiana is dinner theatre meets burlesque meets… Eastern Europe? There was acrobatics, a lot of lip-synching pop music, sparkly outfits and dancing. Oh, and food. Hoards of it.
When I arrived there were platters of assorted (and mainly unidentifiable) appetizers. All delicious — pork, mushroom and chicken crepes, cold onion and cabbage slaw, and the most amazing potato “homefries” with mushrooms. Then came the hot courses, staggered but flowing. Naturally, all of my photos are blurry because in my sloppy food haste I smudged something tasty on the camera lens. #fatproblems
Duck in a sweet wine-cherry sauce atop a baked apple
Breaded veal (we think) chops with a mustard sauce, grilled tomatoes and pasta
Giant grilled salmon fillet with a sweet glaze and onions
At $95 a head the price is a bit steep, but it does come with entertainment, lots of good quality food and dancing. While booze is served you can also BYO, which we did (all vodka of course).
