Miss Yunks can always go for a cupcake. That’s not new news. But how far will she go? Well, that depends how good the cupcake is. It’s a positive relationship – the better a cupcake, the farther she’ll travel.
Luckily for me, this cupcake these three cupcakes were delivered to me at work. Thanks, Mom! One of the many benefits of working close to my mom – surprise cupcake deliveries! Mom happened to be near Sugar Bakery in West Roxbury and because I wanted to go there myself to try their cupcakes, she brought the cupcakes to me. Only she couldn’t decide which flavor to get me, so she got 3. Three whole cupcakes just for me.
Sure I could have shared them, but some things are not meant to shared. Some things are meant to be slowly tasted, letting the frosting melt in your mouth, while laying on the sofa. Everything tastes better while laying on the sofa. Mom picked a vanilla cupcake, a strawberry cupcake, and a cookies ‘n cream cupcake. All excellent choices! I like to try the regular vanilla cupcake when I’m trying a new bakery, because as I’ve explained before the vanilla cupcake is to a bakery as marinara sauce is to an Italian restaurant: the true test of quality. Don’t you love foodie analogies?
Well, the vanilla cupcake passed with flying colors.
Yes, that’s layers of cake and frosting on top of the cupcake. What a genius idea to break up the sugary buttery frosting – add more cake! The whole cupcake is then drizzled with white chocolate. The cake was perfectly moist and both the cake and frosting were full of vanilla flavor. The strawberry cupcake’s frosting tasted like it could only be made with real strawberries, pure, fresh, and delightfully light. The cookies ‘n cream cupcake had a rich chocolate cake and the frosting really tasted like that Oreo flavor you’d want in a frosting.
This post is a tad overdue; I really ate these cupcakes a few weeks ago in 2010. Therefore, I’m allowed to call the Sugar Bakery cupcakes my favorite cupcakes of 2010. They’re the best cupcakes I’ve had all year in the Boston area. If at all feasible, I highly suggest you head over to West Roxbury and get yourself some cupcakes. You don’t have to share, either. No one will know.
Even though these cupcakes were brought to me, I liked them so much that I’d venture over to West Roxbury (wherever that is) to sample more flavors, more desserts, and Sugar’s sister savory restaurant The Real Deal Deli next door.
Do you have a favorite cupcake – or whatever your favorite dessert is – of 2010?

Oh interesting! Sugar Bakery came to CupcakeCamp and they brought at least 300 cupcakes. Sadly though I was so busy running around that I never got to try them. I’ve been meaning to go visit for months. I definitely need to get on that.
I still love Mix Bakery cupcakes the best!
My favorite dessert will always be cookie dough cheesecake with extra whipped cream.
The cookies and cream cupcake sounds delicious.
Yum I love all things cookie dough too! And I love giant bowls of whipped cream, hold the ice cream.
I can see how these might have made it to the top of your 2010 list. They look delicious. While I visit often, I rarely comment and one on my resolutions for the new year is to no longer be a silent partner. I really enjoy the banter and food you share with your readers. It keeps me coming back. I hope the new year brings you a full measure of health and happiness. Have a great day. Blessings…Mary
West Roxbury is just on the other side of JP… you should go! (We actually have high hopes of buying a house there.) The cupcakes look tasty! So nice of your mom to send you three different kinds! And I wouldn’t share either.
I definitely want to check this bakery out. My favorite cupcakes were the Oreo Cupcakes from Lulu’s in the North End. I think they closed though… Maybe this place will become the new favorite.
Sugar’s cupcakes look orgasmic. Thank you for the recommendation.
The cupcakes are no longer there….. I should know I used to make them I will keep you posted to the Bakery I will next bring my talents to. I get a ton of e mails asking me where I am now… Stay tuned!
