GUEST POST: NY Stadium Nachos – Yankees vs Mets

As baseball season is in full force, we welcome a guest blogger and fellow NYC foodie, Cam-O, to discuss one of our favorite, sloppy treats – ballpark nachos. Our guest, a vegetarian like Miss Yunks, has known A-Tooch since a young age. Both enjoy wild NYC food adventures (budget permitting) and cooking.

There’s only one thing Cam-O loves more than watching a baseball game and that’s food. More specifically, nachos.

This past week I had a chance to eat not one but two heaping portions of nachos. The first was while watching the Mets play Phillies at Citi Field. The new stadium is known for their extensive food options but I still stuck with my Mexican favorite. Normally, I only allow freshly melted cheese on my nachos (none of that fake Cheez-Wiz for this girl), but this nacho cheese sauce is now an exception to my rule.

A plentiful portion of chips was covered in enough cheese sauce to coat but not enough to cause (gasp!) soggy chips. Then I had my choice of beans, meat (nada, I’m strictly a veggie), jalapenos (just a few, for added flavor), and fresh pico de gallo (of course). By the time my basket was handed to me I was salivating. The verdict? Delicious. Plenty of toppings to cover each and every chip down to the last crispy bite. Oh yeah, the Mets won.

And, funnily enough, I received last-minute tickets to Yankee stadium last night to watch Johnny Damon return (and destroy) with his new Detroit Tigers. I already had dinner but of course that’s never stopped me from eating before. So during the 5th inning I made the long trek around the stadium (there are only two nacho stands in the ballpark) to get my nachos at Wholly Guacamole. I hesitantly approached the cart, as the server didn’t seem all that keen to have a customer. She let me know right away that #1, they were out of sour cream and #2, they were closing momentarily. Apparently the last-call in the 7th really just applies to beer. I quickly let her know that I still wanted to order, though I didn’t have many choices: cheese, jalapenos and salsa were my only options. As I made my way back to my seat, I noticed the chips starting to sag so I took a few quick bites. Not good. The cheese was really watery and salsa was very mealy. Sadly, we lost that night and I lost what little confidence I had in the Yanks food options.

I’ll always be a diehard fan of the Yankee team, but I’ll stick to cheese fries at the stadium from now on.

I don’t really like either team and don’t really like either nacho.
