Our friends over at Nachos NY share a mutual passion with TFAW – everything nachos. So, when Nachos NY homeboy Lee invited A-Tooch to guest judge a special event, she jumped on it.
The 1st Annual Salsa Slam had a dang good turn out, considering the weather was less than desirable. I, of course, dragged along a team of salsa connoisseurs (mainly those who can take the heat, because I sure cannot).
I walked around and sampled 17 extremely different recipes – including a curry salsa, a watermelon salsa and salsa verde. I even ventured to the table with salsa being served by some dude in a Nacho Libre mask — as if that isn’t warning enough. The stand-out winner was decided unanimously among us judges. Sarah Alvarez (contestant #11) with Tia Arkie’s Chile – a homemade family recipe that tasted fresh as can be. (And what a gem that little Sarah was too – we got down to salsa chat at the bar after the contest.)
Here’s the goods (Photo compliments of Natasha Ryan at Metromix)
The Brooklyn Salsa Company sponsored the event and brought some of their own tasty salsas along. Our favorite was the Staten Island “The Green” — delishhh.
Read a recap of the event from Metromix NY, who incorrectly reported us as “Working Class Foodies” but hey, we ain’t mad at ya.
Oh, and la creme de la creme…the piece de resistance? A LIVE mariachi quintet performing for all the guests. OLE!
