Karen from Island Treasures Gourmet asked TFAW if we’d like to try a rum cake. Never two to say no to dessert, we each picked our flavors and our rum cakes were on their way.
A-Tooch’s number one liquor is rum, so its no surprise she was all over this cake.
I opted for the coconut flavor and the moist cake tasted just that — like rum and coconut mixed together in a delicious tropical drink. The cake instantly reminded me of vacations in the Caribbean (this may be because the gift shops there sell an almost identical product). The cake is so dense, like a pound cake, that a little sliver goes a long way! The perfect pairing is some kind of flavored coffee. I had mine for dessert one night with a mocha latte.
Would I buy this for myself? Not in full, it’s just a whole lot of cake. I would absolutely scoop a slice of this up at a restaurant, though. The packaging (and quite frankly, the surprising shelf life) makes this rum cake a great gift idea.
Miss Yunks doesn’t usually pick rum based cocktails, but she does love cake so she was excited to try Island Treasures Gourmet rum cake.
As soon as I received my rum cake, I put it in the freezer. I was waiting for an opportunity to share the cake with a large group of people. Several weeks (months?) later I brought the cake to brunch at my aunt’s house and we ate it for dessert. I had moved the cake to the refrigerator 24 hours in advance so the cake was defrosted by the time we were ready to eat it. It was perfectly moist when we sliced it and didn’t taste like it had ever been frozen. The rum flavor was strong throughout the cake. I had the Original Vanilla flavor and I agree with A-Tooch that it has a pound cake consistency, mine with a sweet vanilla rum flavor.
On its own, the cake is intense. Perhaps it would pair well with a rum-based cocktail. I paired it with a giant strawberry.
I also probably would not have purchased this cake on my own; my favorite desserts include high levels of chocolate. I’m glad I had the opportunity to try the cake, and so is my family! The rum cake would be a great gift for your rum loving friends, or for yourself. Just keep it in the freezer until you’re ready to enjoy.
Do you like rum cake? Would you order one online?
Disclaimer: We each received a rum cake free of charge and we were not obligated to review the cakes. Our opinions are our own.

I’ve never tried rum cake but agree that it is a lot of cake for one person!
I have had rum cake, and thought it was pretty good – really, cake + rum – how can you not go wrong?!
Great seeing you last night, Melissa! Thanks again!
This is the best rum cake I have ever tried, and I DO like rum cake. I purchase this cake during the holidays because my whole family loves it. It is moist and yummy! Well worth the price, but a little does go a long way because it is so rich. This is one of our favorite treats and everyone that has tried it that I know absolutely loves it. My favorite is the cinnamon streusel.
