Mad Batter Cupcake Cafe

There’s a new cupcake shop in town: Mad Batter Cupcake Cafe.  Mad Batter recently moved into Newton Center on Center St.  Miss Yunks’ friend Julia  told her about it just last week and she didn’t waste any time checking it out. I conveniently had breakfast with Dad at Johnny’s Lucheonette, a personal favorite, and after we took a little walk around Newton Center.  As we walked towards Mad Batter, I hoped that the cupcakes didn’t look special because I didn’t really want one; I just wanted to check out the new shop.  I was completely satisfied from the omelette I’d just had.  But, then we walked into the bakery and saw all of this:

I love a shop with cute cupcake merchandise on display.  The cupcakes also looked delicious.  Dad asked if I wanted to split one and I couldn’t say no.  He let me pick the flavor and I chose the Cherry Bomb.

It looked like vanilla cake with cherry frosting topped with a chocolate covered cherry.  And it was, but there was a surprise inside.

A cherry filling was baked in the middle of the cupcake.  I know cherry cupcakes exist, but I’d never had one, and I’d certainly never had a layered cupcake.  I appreciated the twist on this otherwise not so original cupcake.  And the flavor? Mad Batter nailed it.  The cake was dense; “this is not a light fluffy white cake” said Dad.  The cherry filling was like a pie filling.  The frosting was smooth and creamy and tasted just like cherries – real cherries.  I really don’t like maraschino cherries but I love real cherries, and this frosting tasted like real cherries.

Mad Batter had about a dozen flavors to choose from, and they also have the option to design your own cupcake.  You can pick from chocolate or vanilla cake and then pick your toppings to mix into frosting.

If you’re thinking this concept is identical to another suburban cupcake shop, well you’re exactly right.  Remember my visit to Treat Cupcake Bar in Needham? These two shops are very similar.  I asked Mad Batter if they’re related and the woman behind the counter said no, but they are friends.  The shops offer different options for the make-your-own cupcake, and Mad Batter sells cupcake related items, but their concepts are the same.  If you’re in the area, give Mad Batter a taste.
